Bizarre Suicide

At the 1994 annual awards dinner given by the American Association for Forensic Science, AAFS President Don Harper Mills astounded his audience in San Diego with the legal complications of a bizarre death. Here is the story.

"On 23 March 1994, the medical examiner viewed the body of Ronald Opus and concluded that he died from a shotgun wound of the head. The decedent had jumped from the top of a ten-story building intending to commit suicide (he left a note indicating his despondency). As he fell past the ninth floor, his life was interrupted by a shotgun blast through a window, which killed him instantly. Neither the shooter nor the decedent was aware that a safety net had been erected at the eighth floor level to protect some window washers and that Opus would not have been able to complete his suicide anyway because of this."

"Ordinarily," Dr. Mills continued, "a person who sets out to commit suicide ultimately succeeds, even though the mechanism might not be what he intended. That Opus was shot on the way to certain death nine stories below probably would not have changed his mode of death from suicide to homicide. But the fact that his suicidal intent would not have been successful caused the medical examiner to feel that he had homicide on his hands.

"The room on the ninth floor whence the shotgun blast emanated was occupied by an elderly man and his wife. They were arguing and he was threatening her with the shotgun. He was so upset that, when he pulled the trigger, he completely missed his wife and the pellets went through the window, striking Opus.

"When one intends to kill subject A but kills subject B in the attempt, one is guilty of the murder of subject B. When confronted with this charge, the old man and his wife were both adamant that neither knew that the shotgun was loaded. The old man said it was his long-standing habit to threaten his wife with the unloaded shotgun. He had no intention to murder her - therefore, the killing of Opus appeared to be an accident. That is, the gun had been accidentally loaded.

"The continuing investigation turned up a witness who saw the old couple's son loading the shotgun approximately six weeks prior to the fatal incident. It transpired that the old lady had cut off her son's financial support and the son, knowing the propensity of his father to use the shotgun threateningly, loaded the gun with the expectation that his father would shoot his mother. The case now becomes one of murder on the part of the son for the death of Ronald Opus."

There was an exquisite twist. "Further investigation revealed that the son had become increasingly despondent over the failure of his attempt to engineer his mother's murder. This led him to jump off the ten-story building on March 23, only to be killed by a shotgun blast through a ninth story window.

"The medical examiner closed the case as a suicide."

The answer is simple: you did.

See, if you think back, really hard, you might vaguely remember a Platonic guy pal who always seemed to want to spend time with you. He'd tag along with you when you went shopping, stop by your place for a movie when you were lonely but didn't feel like going out, or even sit there and hold you while you sobbed and told him about how horribly the (other) guy that you were f**king treated you.

At the time, you probably joked with your girlfriends about how he was a little puppy dog, always following you around, trying to do things to get you to pay attention to him. They probably teased you because they thought he had a crush on you. Given that his behavior was, admittedly, a little pathetic, you vehemently denied having any romantic feelings for him, and buttressed your position by claiming that you were "just friends." Besides, he totally wasn't your type. I mean, he was a little too short, or too bald, or too fat, or too poor, or didn't know how to dress himself, or basically be or do any of the things that your tall, good-looking, fit, rich, stylish boyfriend at the time pulled off with such ease.

Eventually, your Platonic buddy drifted away, as your relationship with the boyfriend got more serious and spending time with this other guy was, admittedly, a little weird, if you weren't dating him. More time passed, and the boyfriend eventually cheated on you, or became boring, or you realized that the things that attracted you to him weren't the kinds of things that make for a good, long-term relationship. So, now, you're single again, and after having tried the bar scene for several months having only encountered players and douche bags, you wonder, "What happened to all the nice guys?"

Well, once again, you did.

You ignored the nice guy. You used him for emotional intimacy without reciprocating, in kind, with physical intimacy. You laughed at his consideration and resented his devotion. You valued the aloof boyfriend more than the attentive "just-a-" friend. Eventually, he took the hint and moved on with his life. He probably came to realize, one day, that women aren't really attracted to guys who hold doors open; or make dinners just because; or buy you a Christmas gift that you mentioned, in passing, that you really wanted five months ago; or listen when you're upset; or hold you when you cry. He came to realize that, if he wanted a woman like you, he'd have to act more like the boyfriend that you had. He probably cleaned up his look, started making some money, and generally acted like more of an bastard than he ever wanted to be.

Fact is, now, he's probably getting laid, and in a way, your ultimate rejection of him is to thank for that. And I'm sorry that it took the complete absence of "nice guys" in your life for you to realize that you missed them and wanted them. Most women will only have a handful of nice guys stumble into their lives, if that.

So, if you're looking for a nice guy, here's what you do:

1.) Build a time machine.
2.) Go back a few years and pull your head out of your ass.
3.) Take a look at what's right in front of you and grab ahold of it.

I suppose the other possibility is that you STILL don't really want a nice guy, but you feel the social pressure to at least appear to have matured beyond your infantile taste in men. In which case, you might be in luck, because the nice guy you claim to want has, in reality, shed his nice guy mantle and is out there looking to unleash his cynicism and resentment onto someone just like you. If you were five years younger.

On the morning of 07/01/2009, on the way to work, someone boarded the bus, tapped her card to the ez-link reader, and found out that her card had no money left in it. She then proceeded to ask the bus captain the price for a trip using coins, then she counted out her coins......and tried to find a hole i the ez-link reader for her to put her coins into. After about 10 seconds, the bus captain finally decided to do something, and pointed out the slot for payment by coins. Would have made a good YouTube video sia......

Wojtek (1942-1963; ['vɔjtɛk]) usually spelt Voytek in Britain, was a Syrian Brown Bear cub adopted by soldiers of the 22 Kompania Zaopatrywania Artylerii (22nd. Artillery Supply Company) of the Polish II Corps. During the Battle of Monte Cassino, Wojtek helped to move ammunition.

In 1942 a local boy found a bear-cub near Hamadan in Persia (Iran). He sold it to the soldiers of the Polish Army stationed nearby for a couple of canned meat tins. As the bear was less than a year old, it initially had problems swallowing and was fed with condensed milk from an emptied vodka bottle. The bear became quite an attraction for soldiers and civilians alike, and soon became an unofficial mascot of all units stationed nearby. Because of that, it was officially drafted into the Polish Army and was listed among the soldiers of the 22nd Artillery Supply Company of the Polish II Corps. Together with it he moved to Iraq and then through Syria, Palestine and Egypt to southern Italy.

The bear was fed with fruits, marmalade, honey and syrup, and was often rewarded with beer, which became his favourite drink. He also enjoyed eating cigarettes. As one of the officially enlisted "soldiers" of the company, he was sleeping with the other men in their tents or in a special wooden crate transported on lorries. According to numerous accounts, during the Battle of Monte Cassino Wojtek helped his patrons by transporting ammunition - and never dropped any crate. In recognition of the bear's popularity the HQ approved an effigy of a bear holding an artillery shell as the official emblem of the 22nd Company (by then renamed to 22nd Transport Company).

Following the end of World War II in 1945, the bear (along with parts of the II Corps) was transported to Berwickshire in Scotland. Stationed in the village of Hutton, near Duns, Wojtek soon became popular among local civilians and the press. The Polish-Scottish Association made Wojtek one of its honorary members. Following the demobilization, on November 15, 1947, Wojtek was given to the Edinburgh Zoo. There Wojtek spent the rest of his days, often visited by journalists and former Polish soldiers, some of whom would toss him cigarettes. Wojtek died in December of 1963, at the age of 22. At the time of his death he weighed nearly 500 pounds (250 kilograms) and had a length of over 6 feet (180 centimetres).

The media attention contributed to Wojtek's popularity. He was a frequent guest of BBC's Blue Peter program. Among memorial plaques commemorating the bear-soldier are a stone tablet in the Edinburgh Zoo, plaques in the Imperial War Museum and the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa, as well as a monument in Sikorski's Museum in London. There are proposals to erect a memorial in Edinburgh. It is said that Prince Charles, when visiting the Imperial War Museum with his sons, remarked to the guide that there was no need to tell the story of Wojtek since all three of them knew it well.

Last weekend's camp was......interesting. As a helper, I ended up running around. And around. And around. I think I have the route between Canteen 1 and Canteen 2 memorized by now.

Lemme see...... Whiskey group was the most enthu. Maybe they were on......I dunno......whiskey? XD

What else...... Sierra's guys had no balls, and, um, Zulu and Juliet merged to form Zuliet. Jay is gay(but I'm sure you already knew that), Ash is as reckless as Ash(Satoshi), Madame President got stressed out, as did some other com members, which led to people getting pissed off. Campers......were at some times high and at other times sianz. I mean, coming in at the end of a night walk thru school sian? Not some, but almost all??? Anyway, at debrief we figured out the problems, so that's not too bad. Well, except that Camp Commandant Ken needed more manpower but decided to assign me......nothing? I spent the whole night walk time in our bunk doing nothing, and he complains of lack of manpower. Not my fault. I wanted in on the night walk, but...... *shrugz*

On a different topic, tomorrow after school, my dad agreed to bring me to Sim Lim to get GTA IV!

Today was CCA Fiesta, and I went to help out after I finished my IS lessons, which I had scheduled for 8-12 hahaha! Wore a tactical vest and walked around holding an SMG which vibrates when the trigger is pulled, making some noise, and each gun had a laser pointer! LOL!

Azri was inspired today! When people ask "Is the gun real?" or "Is it loaded?" my genius friend replies: "Ya, loaded. With laser."

Blues head to Asia

Chelsea have announced a pre-season tour to Asia this summer.

Chief Executive Peter Kenyon confirmed the Samsung-Chelsea Asia Tour 2008 at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday.

Chelsea will take on a Malaysian Selection, an all-star team of the best players from the Malaysian Super League, in a match currently scheduled for July 29 in Kuala Lumpur.

Club vs Country! LOL! Chelsea fans, pack your bags and book your tickets/hotels! The Blues are headed for Malaysia!

France's Sarkozy raises prospect of Olympic boycott

French President Nicolas Sarkozy left open Tuesday the possibility of boycotting the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony over China's crackdown in Tibet, though other major world leaders vowed to attend.

The White House said that US President George W. Bush still planned to be present for the August 8 opening of the Olympics, and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown's office said he would be there for the closing ceremony on August 24.

But Sarkozy spoke out amid growing political calls for stronger action against the deadly crackdown on anti-Chinese protests in Tibet.

Even countries opposing any boycott have urged China to show restraint handling the demonstrations. Tibet's government in exile said 140 people have been killed in the unrest over the past two weeks, while China says there have been 20 deaths.

Sarkozy, who arrives in Britain for a two-day visit later on Wednesday, said "all options are open" regarding a boycott. He appealed to the "sense of responsibility" of China's leaders over the unrest.

The president's aides specified that France was still considering the possibility of snubbing the opening ceremony, but ruled out boycotting the entire Games.

Alain Bernard, the new French swimming star who set three world records at the European championships, backed a protest of the opening ceremony. "It would send a strong signal to the politicians," he told TF1 television.

It was also announced that the Dalai Lama, the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, would visit France during the Olympics.

Other countries remained firmly against any boycott.

"The last I checked with the president, no, our position remains that we believe that the purpose of the Olympics is to let international athletes come together and showcase their talents," said White House spokeswoman Dana Perino.

US State Department spokesman Sean McCormack made similar comments, saying, "I'll reiterate our view, and that is that the Olympics is an important international sporting event."

Another US political leader, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, rejected the boycott calls.

"I am not in favour of a boycott of the Olympic Games. The Olympic Games are a sporting event," she told reporters in Barcelona, the Europa Press news agency reported.

In Britain, which will host the 2012 Olympics, Downing Street said Prime Minister Brown was still planning to attend the Beijing closing ceremony.

Other politicians called for mass demonstrations when the Olympic torch passes through London on April 6, and British Foreign Secretary David Miliband said the country would allow Tibet protestors to stage a demonstration when the Olympic torch passes through London.

But Miliband argued for moderation over Tibet, saying "the danger is that people give up on that (peaceful) course and turn to a more violent course of action."

Australia, Germany and Japan have ruled out boycotting the Olympics while urging the Chinese authorities to show restraint. Germany's government said China and the Dalai Lama should reach a peaceful resolution to the crisis.

After protests marred the lighting of the Olympic torch in Greece on Monday, Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith promised safe passage for the torch relay when it comes to Canberra on April 24.

"If people want to peacefully protest about the torch or the Olympics or Tibet, that is what Australian society or New Zealand society is all about, but they should do that in a sensible and peaceful way," Smith said.

Japan rejected calls for a boycott, but Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura said: "For China's own sake, it is best to be as open and transparent as possible" handling protests.

Other countries, including Italy, Poland, Spain and Switzerland have said they have no plans to boycott any part of the Olympics.

China meanwhile condemned protests surrounding the torch relay around the world, after three members of the French-based Reporters Sans Frontieres (Reports Without Borders - RSF) disrupted the lighting of the torch ceremony at Ancient Olympia on Monday.

One unfurled a banner demanding a boycott of the Games and another tried to grab the microphone from the chief Chinese Games organiser as he gave a speech.

Two Nobel peace prize winners weighed in Tuesday. South African anti-apartheid hero Desmond Tutu called for China to engage with the Dalai Lama, saying the spiritual leader defined "non-violence and compassion and goodness."

Costa Rica President Oscar Arias, who won the 1987 Nobel peace prize for his efforts to bring peace to Central America and is a friend of the Dalai Lama, said he was against a boycott of the Games. He said "dialogue between civilised people" was needed.

Meanwhile Cuba's government, which has important trade links with China, said it was "strongly opposed to any intention to interfere in China's internal affairs."

And Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said that unrest in Tibet was part of a US plan aimed at boycotting the Olympics.

"The violence in Tibet is the product of a plan of aggression of the United States against China, and in short term, try to boycott the Olympic Games," Chavez said at a meeting of foreign correspondents in Caracas.

"Venezuela supports with passion the celebration of these games," he said.

Well, based on my tagboard, the number of readers here is very very low and can probably be counted on one hand. I shan't bother with the links section as of now. Maybe next time, if I feel like it, or if someone asks for it.

Now on to school matters. My timetable for the next semester states that on every even week's Wednesday, meaning the Wednesdays of week 2, week 4, and so on, of school, I have classes from 10am to 5pm with no breaks in between. At all. None. Zero. What are we expected to do, bring packed lunches into lecture?

But wait! The first hour is a tutorial, and the rest are all practicals! That means packed lunches would not work, either! Any suggestions?

Kai Yi has some problems understanding this article.

Basically, what it says is that scientists have found a way to store 'nothing', meaning vacuum. Read the article. Please. If you don't get it, then read my interpretation of the article.

The example on light shows that when light is travelling through gas and suddenly stopped, it gets imprinted on the atoms. When you let it move again, there is no more print. Same for the vacuum.

Ok. An easier explanation. Compare it to your computer. Everytime you move your mouse or type there are zeros and ones being created and erased. When you save, it creates an imprint of that particular set of information. The only difference is that when you load a saved file on your computer, the original saved file is still there. When you do that for the vacuum, or for light, the original 'file' is gone.

Now you understand?

Dance of the Dragon, a movie filmed in Singapore, is coming out on the 1st of May(tentatively). I remember the set in the tea house, where Jian Min and I both got paid for doing nothing. Well, he got paid for doing nothing. I got paid for sitting in one of the rooms pretending to play chess. Interesting day's work. I'll probably never ever do that again. Ever.

LONDON - Nearly half of British men surveyed would give up sex for six months in return for a 50-inch plasma TV, a survey — perhaps unsurprisingly carried out for a firm selling televisions — said on Friday.

Electrical retailer Comet surveyed 2,000 Britons, asking them what they would give up for a large television, one of the latest consumer “must-haves.”

The firm found 47 percent of men would give up sex for half a year, compared to just over a third of women.

A quarter of people said they would give up smoking, with roughly the same proportion willing to give up chocolate.
